In all, 171 entries were submitted and 64 finalists were selected from 13 different schools and organizations. These finalists were showcased at the Big Bones Bash, held at McWane Center on Saturday, March 6, 2004. The winners were chosen by a panel of celebrity judges which included JoEllen O'Hara, Food Editor of the Birmingham News; Jamie Merrifield, nutritionist for Food World; Bruno Frohlich, Physical Anthropologist, Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History; John Malcolm, Cabot Vermont dairy farmer; Suzanne Henson, Coordinator, UAB EatRight Weight Management Program; Mickey Childers, President of the Alabama Dairy Association; Chris Pollone, reporter, NBC-13; and Daniel Bussey, 7th grade student and top student with Alabama's District 4-H.
